Hotel St. Cloud

Historic Hotel St. Cloud

The keystone to historic downtown Cañon City

Originally built at this location in 1890, the Hotel St. Cloud is one of the oldest hotels still standing in the State of Colorado. Originally constructed in nearby Silver Cliff in 1878-1879, when the silver industry busted, the owner dismantled the hotel and shipped the materials to Canon City, where it was constructed at its current location at 6th and Main.

The Hotel St. Cloud had an elevator added in 1892 – the first in Canon City, and a Bar and billiard room added later that same year.

It was decreed a “first class hotel” by the local paper, and became a popular destination for those visitors who came to Canon City to partake of the healing waters of the natural soda springs nearby. It also served as a home away from home for the rich movie-making industry of Canon City’s history. Tom Mix is among the silent film stars who graced the guest registry.

The Original Hotel

The historic Hotel St. Cloud has undergone a number of transformations since it was built.

It was originally located in Silver Cliff, Colorado, and was transported to Cañon City after the mining in that area went bust. The spring of 1887 saw the hotel rebuilt at the corner of 6th and Main Street, where it stands – stately and elegant – today.

The hotel has been used as an event center, a meeting place, and an office building – It once held the headquarters of the Continental Trailways Office and Monarch Airlines in the 1940's. One can even imagine starlets and movie stars – like Tom Mix, Bill Duncan, and Joe Ryan – sipping drinks in the elegant hotel bar, located on the first floor.

Since that time, the hotel has changed owners two dozen times, until it was recently acquired by the Future of Yesterday Foundation.

The building plans to boast 31 guest rooms on the second and third floors, with the fourth floor serving as six separate apartments.
